Ain’t no stoppin the Eagles now
Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now was a hit song from the 70’s, but it could easily be the theme song for the Eagles following their 51-23 destruction of the Denver Broncos in an inter-conference game Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field before 69,596 spectators.
There is no stopping this team from entering the post-season for the first time in four years and it was made clear by their quick start in the win. For the last two weeks, the Eagles didn’t score their first touchdown until close to halftime. They won both games, against Washington and San Francisco, because the Eagles were able to recover from a slow start against inferior teams.
If they had a slow start against the Broncos, the game could come down to the wire. The Broncos have one of the top defenses in the league and outside linebacker Von Miller has been known to dominate a game. If they weren’t able to score a first quarter touchdown against the previous two teams, maybe they wouldn’t score one against the Broncos either.
Fear not, Eagles fans. Second-year quarterback Carson Wentz threw two TDs in the opening stanza and they were on roll. They lead 17-3 when the quarter ended and scored two touchdowns to the Broncos two field goals for a 31-9 halftime difference. The Broncos never contested and were clearly outplayed by the Eagles in nearly every category as their winning streak reached seven games.
They are in first-place in the East Division with an 8-1 record and it would take a major collapse to fall into second. There isn’t one facet of the game, they excel at. They are good in all facets, including offense, defense and special teams. The one drawback has been kicker Jake Elliott has missed an extra point the last two games. In both games, the missed kick didn’t make any difference but this is the regular season. In the playoffs, a missed extra point could mean the difference between continuing onto Minnesota and the Super Bowl on Feb. 4 and watching the game from your couch.
Wentz was up to his old tricks and further solidified being recommended as the league’s MVP. For the third time in five games, he threw four touchdown passes and steered his team to victory. Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery caught two touchdowns, Corey Clement and Trey Burton caught one each. As for the aforementioned, Miller, he didn’t record his first sack of Wentz until more than midway through the third period. By then, the Eagles were driving for their sixth touchdown and a 44-9 lead. The Broncos knew they had been whipped but there was little to be done to discontinue the onslaught.
The only highlight in the game from the Broncos’ perspective was their only offensive touchdown followed by a defensive touchdown in the fourth quarter. This was a particularly sweet win for the Eagles because they have a bye this week and can rest up for the Dallas game on Nov. 19. Dallas played the other inter-conference game and stayed within two-and-a-half games of the Eagles in the East Division with a 28-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The NFC has 19 won of the 31 inter-conference games so far, and has outscored the AFC 770 to 663. The inter-conference games this week are New Orleans at Buffalo, Cleveland at Detroit, New York Jets travel to Tampa Bay and Houston visits the Los Angeles Rams.
