a few close ones
There were some close inter-conference games in the fourth week of the NFL season. The Eagles (3-1 and first in the NFC East) held on for dear life in their 26-24 win over the Los Angeles Chargers (0-4) – I almost wrote San Diego – and are now riding high on a two-game winning streak. Buffalo (3-1) got even with a 23-17 win over Atlanta (3-1), but New Orleans (2-2) shut out Miami (1-2) 20-0 and Carolina (3-1) nipped New England (2-2) 33-30.
Seattle (2-2) blew out Indianapolis (1-3) 46-18 so if you’re keeping track at home, that was four wins for the NFC and one for the AFC. In the final inter-conference game, host Kansas City defeated Washington 29-20. The game was much closer than the score indicates. The Chiefs were on the Redskins 26-yard-line with eight seconds left in regulation and the score 20-20. In came field goal kicker Harrison Butker and he made a 43-yard field goal with four seconds left in regulation. The Chiefs returned a fumble on the final play of the game for a meaningless touchdown.
The game was watched by a lot of the Eagles’ faithful. The Redskins (2-2) were knocked out of a first-place tie with the Eagles by losing. The Chiefs (4-0) are the only undefeated team in the league. The Falcons were undefeated until their loss to the Bills. Of the 17 inter-conference games played so far, the NFC has won 10 and the AFC 7. The NFC leads in points 403 to 364.
The fifth week kicks off with an inter-conference game between New England and host Tampa Bay on Thursday night football. San Francisco visits Indianapolis and the Los Angeles Chargers travel across the country to play the New York Giants. In the first bye week of the season, Atlanta, Denver, New Orleans and Washington are off.
Inter-conference play continues the following week with Miami visiting Atlanta, Chicago at Baltimore, Los Angeles Rams at Jacksonville and the New York Giants at Denver. Buffalo, Cincinnati, Dallas and Seattle have byes.
