This Eagles season should be exciting
If the first two games are any indication, the Eagles should give their fans plenty of thrills and spills this season. They split the two contests but the scoring margin in both was six points. In both games, we were sitting on the edge of our seats and watched on television or listened intently on the radio as the outcome wasn’t decided until the end.
In the season opener, the Atlanta Falcons visited Lincoln Financial Field and were sent home with a loss in almost the same exact fashion as last season in the NFC playoffs. Quarterback Matt Ryan tried to complete a game-winning touchdown pass on the sideline to wide receiver Julio Jones but was unsuccessful. In the playoff game, a pass from Ryan intended for Jones went through his hands. He probably would’ve landed out of bounds if he had caught the ball. This time he caught the ball but was out of bounds by at least two yards.
Then came last Sunday’s game against the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After falling behind 27-7, the Birds fought back and were within six points late in the game, 27-21, but failed to hold the Bucs and they converted two first downs. When the Eagles did get the ball, they only had time for a desperation hook-and-ladder which didn’t come close to being successful.
Quarterback Carson Wentz has been cleared for contact and will play Sunday when the Indianapolis Colts visit the Linc at 1 p.m. There is one thing for sure: the Linc will be rocking and rolling in anticipation of seeing Carson Wentz run with his team out onto the field.
There is no question backup quarterback Nick Foles did an outstanding job while Wentz was out with a torn ACL that occurred last December when the Eagles played the Los Angeles Rams. Foles was the quarterback through the playoffs and was the Super Bowl MVP in a 41-33 thrilling victory over the New England Patriots.
But the leader of the team is Carson Wentz and he gives the team identity. He is consistent and not as up-and-down as Foles. Wentz is sure-handed with the football and has the ability to lengthen a play. He can throw across his body and has the amazing ability to avoid a sack.
Frank Reich is the new head coach of the Colts and is the former offensive coordinator for the Eagles under head coach Doug Pedersen. He might have enjoyed his tenure with Pedersen culminating in the Super Bowl title but he’d like nothing better than to beat his old team. The Colts split their first two games like the Eagles and are coming off a 21-9 win over the Washington Redskins.
The Bucs and Rams are the two conference teams undefeated with 2-0 records. The Rams host the L.A. Chargers (1-1) Sunday at 4. The Bucs host the Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1-1) Monday night at 8:15. In the AFC, Miami, Jacksonville, Cincinnati, Kansas City and Denver are undefeated at 2-0. So far, two games have ended in a tie. Cleveland and Pittsburgh tied on the opening Sunday and last Sunday Minnesota and Green Bay played to a 29-29 standstill.
