What a Sunday!
This is a Sunday the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans will remember for quite some time. Not only did the Eagles dominate their opponent, the Arizona Cardinals at Lincoln Financial Field, but their arch-rival, the Dallas Cowboys, lost to the Green Bay Packers. With the Eagles win and Cowboys loss, the birds have a two-game lead in the NFC East division over Dallas and a game-and-a-half lead over Washington that didn’t play.
When the day was over it almost put people into a state of euphoria that the two things happened within a few hours of each other. There is no telling how far the Eagles can go this season. They get better and better with each game they play. In their opener, a 30-17 win over the host Redskins, they played well but not exactly awe-inspiring. Leading 22-17 late in the game, a fumble was picked up and ran in for a touchdown by defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. But it was a close call as to whether the passing arm of Redskins’ quarterback, Kirk Cousins, was going forward or not. If going forward, it is an incomplete pass, if not going forward, it is a fumble.
The play went under review and the call was made in the Eagles’ favor. If the call had gone the Redskins’ the way, then they would’ve kept the ball and possibly scored a game-winning touchdown. The bottom line was an Eagles’ season-opening win which was an important step to having a successful season. Next came the Kansas City Chiefs and having to deal with their vociferous fans. The Eagles lost 27-20 and returned to Philadelphia 1-1 and looking forward to their home opener against the New York Giants.
A team-record 61-yard field goal by Jake Elliott won the game over the Giants with a second left, 27-24, to put the Eagles over the .500 mark, at 2-1. Last week, they went out to Los Angeles to play the Chargers and won another close one, 26-24, that made their record 3-1 and in first-place over the Redskins by a half-game. When the Skins lost to the Chiefs on Monday night, 29-20, it became a full game over them and the Cowboys.
Yesterday’s game was anything but close. It allowed everyone to take a deep breath and let some air out after two games that you couldn’t turn away from until they were over. The Eagles have a short turnaround and visit North Carolina to play the Panthers on Thursday night football. Another stern test awaits, as if the game against Arizona wasn’t stern enough.
